Permanent Guests

From time to time we take possession of horses who for whatever reason are deemed permanent residents of the Sanctuary. This can be because they are aged, have been surrendered on the promise that they are never to be rehomed, or that we feel they will be unsuitable for rehoming at any stage due to their prior treatment.

We also have some of our own horses who are listed here also as they deserve their own little slice of fame! NOTE: Not all our our permanent guests have come from difficult backgrounds, but they are displayed here so you can have a chance to meet the whole crew.

We believe that whatever their issues, they all deserve a quiet, peaceful place to enjoy the balance of their lives, free from the fear of threat and harm.

Our current permanent residents are:

Paddy
Name Age Breed Colour/Sex Arrival
Paddy, Paddington 9 years Clydesdale Light Bay

Paddy's Story

Paddy came to us in January 2006, emaciated, suffering from Queensland Itch, and with a massively swollen wither. Our wonderful vet thinks that now, after 7 weeks of treatment, there is some foreign body which is trying to extricate itself from within Paddy's body which has no way to escape. Because of this, he is in urgent need of an operation.

An ex Coopers Brewery horse, he was gifted to us by his previous owners, who had agisted him on a horse property where his care was well below the standard which they had expected and were paying for. As they had moved to a city area and no longer had property of their own, they called us for our urgent assistance. Off their own bat, they organised for Paddy to be transported to us. He is emaciated, has Queensland Itch, no tail and a clipped mane, along with his wither problem. He has also had his tail docked at some stage of his life!

Paddy has a long way to go in his recovery and will be a permanent resident of Clydesdale Rescue.

Paddy has had his operation and you can read about his progress on our blog. You can email or donate via the Paypal links on this website to cover his ongoing costs - any amount small or large will be hugely appreciated! Paddy has suffered enough, and he deserves to have a second chance at a good life. We are extremely grateful to all our supporters for their generous assistance in this regard.

This photo was taken in mid May, 3 weeks after Paddy's operation. He is clearly putting on weight and his condition is improving. The swelling in his wither has decreased, and he is a much, much happier boy!

His treatment continues however and he will need specialist diet and medical treatment for at least another 6 months, with the possibility of another final operation down the track.

We are thrilled with his progress to date!

Gwenyvere
Name Age Breed Colour/Sex Gwen
Gwenyvere, Gwennie, Goonie 10 years Clydesdale Roan mare
Gwennie's Story

Gwennie was my second clydesdale. She came to me 3 weeks off foaling with Odin and from the time she stepped off the float her umistakeable presence could be felt by all - not least of all Bernie who she immediately put in his place - 2 steps behind her.

Both of her colts have inherited her amazingly calm disposition, sweet nature and excellent conformation.

She is a calming influence on the new arrivals and firmly retains her crown as head of the herd.

Odin
Name Age Breed Colour/Sex Odin
Odin, Odie-Podie - Pretty - Pony, Odie 18 months Clydesdale Bay roan, gelding
Odin's Story

Odin is Gwenyvere's first foal. He was born in October 2004 and will stay with us for the term of his life. He is much loved, spoiled and the quietest horse you'll ever meet - okay I'm probably a bit biased, but he is truly an impeccable example of the breed's temperament.

He will be trained to harness very shortly. His favourite treat is donuts!

Boney
Name Age Breed Colour/Sex Bonecrusher
Bonecrusher, Boney, Eyebrows 6 months Clydesdale / Shire Bay colt
Boney's Story

Gwenyvere's second foal, Boney has definitely taken on a lot of his father's genes rather than his mothers. He is going to be an enormous boy, surpassing his older brother's growth rate.

Boney, or Eyebrows as he is fondly known because of the two black eyebrows he is currently cultivating, is a cheeky, affectionate, lovable young colt who will also be with me for the remainder of his life. Who could get rid of that face!

I hope next year to have both he and Odin in harness pulling a wagon as a team.
